kext is loading and ATIFacelessFlash.app is prepped, shut off the computer, move your old video card up one slot, and install the new one in Slot 1 as shown in this picture. The command sudo kextutil -nt ATIROMFlasher.kext is useful for this, and you’ll likely have to do sudo chown -R root:wheel ATIROMFlasher.kext and sudo chmod -R 644 ATIROMFlasher.kext to get it loading.

Would I be better off with more power and less VRAM, or vice versa, such as the choice between a Radeon 9600 256 MB or a Radeon 9800 128 MB? What's more important for smooth graphics and video performance on the Mac? GPU processing power? VRAM? Both? I don't do any gaming on the Mac, so that's not an issue. Other stuff: I'm not sure what other things are coming in Leopard that might benefit from a beefier graphics card, but I want to make sure I can enjoy the features with smoothness. I know the Intel Macs have the new multithreaded OpenGL, but what's the status for multithreaded OpenGL for PPC Macs in Leopard? Will I be left out in the cold? I think part of this is because of the OS X implementation of OpenGL as well as my weak video hardware. GoogleEarth: It is smooth like Velveeta on my PC (AthlonXP 2.2ghz, GeForce 6800 GT) but is god awful on the Mac. This zooming visual chunks when the video playing is high quality.
I do a lot of video viewing using Democracy, which has a nice "go to fullscreen" animation. I believe this is due to the paltry 64 MB of VRAM but I have to believe it's the weak GPU as well.

HD video viewing: I'm limited to 720p because my system chunks on 1080 video. General OS X eye candy: dock magnification, genie effect, lots of expose and dashboard. I'm not quite sure exactly how much power I need for the things I do on the Mac. But OS X is different with its graphics subsystems and use of the GPU for regular display activity. I can correlate the specs to the performance I want and functionality I expect on a PC. I'm fairly familiar with graphics cards as they are used in the PC arena. This makes me think that I might have to buy something now or risk never finding the parts in stock anywhere. Lately it seems the AGP graphics cards for Macs are getting a little harder to find now that everything is PCIe. Whenever the idea crosses my mind I do a little web window shopping to see what's out there and what the prices are. I've been kicking around the idea of upgrading the pathetic GeForce FX 5200 64 MB card in my G5 (2 x 2ghz, rev b) for a while.
